This Meta Quest game lets you be a mischievous cat, and we had to try it

Here are my initial thoughts on the VR game “I Am Cat,” which allows players to see the world through a cat’s eyes. I believe that there aren’t any malicious cats. Instead, there are cats who lack love and care, resulting in destructive behavior. However, this does not apply to Archie, the cat I control in I Am Cat, a recently released VR game for Meta Quest. I have discovered a comfortable dwelling with a compassionate elderly woman, and it is an ideal haven for felines, complete with a lavish bed, a spacious tree for climbing, and simulated rodents for playful pursuits within the living space. However, the tranquility is short-lived. In a matter of hours, the neighboring feline, known as Fluffy Joe, reaches out to me through my smartwatch designed for cats, and motivates me to engage in some mischievous activities. In order to become a part ...

A study has discovered that utilizing virtual reality for fitness purposes enhances memory performance and mood.

Recent studies indicate that virtual reality (VR) fitness training enhances working memory and mood to a greater extent compared to traditional training methods or periods of rest. Researchers from the Institute for Human Movement and Medical Sciences at the University of Niigata in Japan studied how physical training using a VR headset affects the brain. They focused on the effects on working memory, which stores information for short periods of time. The findings suggest that engaging in a ten-minute workout with VR headsets has a more beneficial impact on mood and performance in memory-related tasks compared to traditional exercise or rest. The researchers believe that utilizing VR technology for fitness programs could be an ideal way to enhance working memory function and potentially even mitigate the risk of depression and dementia. 25 he...

Meta Quest finally gets a travel mode

Image
Meta introduces an experimental travel mode for Quest 2 and Quest 3 , initially supporting only airplanes. The two Quest headsets can now be used normally on airplanes without any negative effect on the tracking. Meta writes that it tuned the algorithms to account for the motion of an airplane, so you should have a stable and consistent experience now, even when looking out the window. Something Apple Vision Pro still has problems with. If there is Wi-Fi on the plane and a variety of movies and shows available, Quest should enable you to use a browser to access and view that content on a simulated screen. Additionally, you have the option to access the Quest app library and play virtual reality and mixed reality games. At present, the travel mode is exclusively designed for optimal usage on airplanes. Meta intends to incorporate compatibilit...

Researchers rely on Virtual Reality as a complementary therapy for eating disorders

The inventive virtual reality tool known as Awaken Emerse aims to address eating disorders and hinder any potential relapses. Every 52 minutes, an individual loses their life to an eating disorder, as reported by The National Eating Disorder Association . These disorders, which affect nearly 30 million people, significantly alter individuals’ eating behaviors and their perceptions of both food and their bodies. Researchers at the University of Louisville are using virtual reality to develop a new approach to treating eating disorders. Research Professor Christina Ralph-Nearman explains that traditional therapies are often ineffective for many sufferers. Even when treatment is successful, 50 percent relapse within two to six months. VR offers a more realistic and personalized alternative to previous exposure exercises. The university has devel...

What about VR150 and VR135? Is Stereo VR180 the standard for immersive media?

Image
The VR180-3D format has been used for immersive media for several years. In this article, I look at new patent applications for stereo lenses from Canon with a different field of view and their potential impact on immersive media for virtual reality. By Daniel Pohl In the VR180-3D format, the environment is recorded in a hemisphere (180°× 180°) for each eye. In virtual reality, this format is suitable for high immersion, as head tracking with a simultaneous stereoscopic view brings the image very close to the experience of a real scene. But why exactly 180 degrees? What does VR180 refer to? Without virtual reality, stereoscopic VR180 makes not much sense. In VR, however, the format blossoms perfectly to provide both a 3D view and enough viewing angles to see other areas of the image with tracked head movements. Accordingly, the first VR180 c...

Niantic 8th Wall Metaversal Deployment now supports Vision Pro

Can you explain the concept of Metaversal Deployment? According to Niantic, Metaversal Deployment “changes the way developers build and distribute spatial computing experiences.” Metaversal Deployment allows developers to create experiences for a multitude of platforms by providing a way to bridge the gap between devices in different ecosystems as mixed reality and spatial computing advances. The video is hosted by MLS Season Pass commentators Taylor Twellman and Jake Zivin. This brings the total number of immersive video content available for the Apple Vision Pro to five. This year’s lineup of VR games could get even better than 2023

2023 was arguably the best year for VR games to date. But 2024 could top it. Last year, I commemorated the abundance of excellent virtual reality games. I expressed that there hasn’t been a more opportune moment to be a virtual reality player. In addition to the three big budget titles Horizon Call of the Mountain , Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR and Asgard’s Wrath 2 , there were many gems from medium and small VR studios such as Vertigo 2 , Dungeons of Eternity, The 7th Guest VR , Vampire: The Masquerade – Justice, Racket Club , Arizona Sunshine 2 and many more that raised the bar for VR gaming. 2023 witnessed an unprecedented number of outstanding and sophisticated titles as compared to any previous year. Four huge VR titles announced for 2024 Three virtual reality (VR) exclusive games, inspired by popular franchises, have already been anno...

Homeworld: Vast Reaches Review

Image
Real-time strategy games are among my favourite genres. They are also dramatically underserved in VR. Despite notable PCVR iterations of the genre like the outstanding Brass Tactics or the “quite good” Air Mech Command, not to mention the amazing MOBA-infused offers like Glassbreakers and Final Assault , standalone has seen very little in the genre. There are indeed several competitors for The Quest. Titles like Eternal Starlight, Battlegroup VR, or Gods of Gravity each have their own merits, but in general, they all appeared to be overshadowed. Therefore, when a new game in this genre is announced, especially one from a popular pancake chain, I pay close attention. Join me on a journey, dear viewer, into the dark emptiness, and let’s find out if Farbridge developers have delivered what we truly deserve or if we’ll be left adrift among the stars without purpose. Mother is My Ship For those familiar with the source material, Vast Reaches slots neatly into the period between the...
